The Sexualities Project at Northwestern (SPAN) is pleased to announce that applications for Dissertation Fellowships for the 2017-18 academic year are now being accepted. Northwestern University doctoral students who either have advanced to candidacy or will advance in the current academic year, and whose dissertation relates to the topics of sexual orientation and/or sexuality (including health in social context), are invited to apply.

CFP: Summer Research Grants

The Sexualities Project at Northwestern (SPAN) is pleased to announce that applications for Summer Research Grants for Summer 2017 are now being accepted. Northwestern University doctoral students – at any stage – who have a research project that relates to the topics of sexual orientation and/or sexuality (including health in social context) are welcome to apply. SPAN Summer Research Grants are designed to cover expenses related to research (within the guidelines outlined below). Projects of all sizes are welcome, up to a maximum of $2,500 per grant.

Call for Graduate Student Commentators for the SPAN Annual Workshop

SPAN is in need of graduate student commentators for the four panels that will be held in conjunction with the annual SPAN Workshop, whose theme this year is “Stigma: Deviance, Criminality, and Sexualities.” The Workshop will take place on April 20th – 21st, with the keynote address taking place on that Thursday and the panels convening on that Friday.

The four panels, along with the names of the invited speakers, are:

Call for Proposals: Faculty Research on Sexuality

Faculty Research Funding: Apply NowThe Sexualities Project at Northwestern (SPAN) invites applications from Northwestern faculty members for funding to conduct research on sexuality from a social science perspective (broadly construed) in academic year 2017-18.

SPAN will be allocating up to $150,000 for faculty research projects in 2017-18. Proposals will be funded according to evaluations by external reviewers who are senior scholars in sexuality studies. We anticipate funding both small and large projects, and the requested funding may be of any size up to a maximum of $50,000 per proposal. In recent years, awards have ranged from $3,000 to $40,000.

Call for Proposals: Reading Group (Winter 2017)

readinggroup-button2We invite faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students to participate in a small, focused reading group (15 to 18 people) that will meet during Winter Quarter 2017. The topic for this year is “Thinking with Difference: Critical Race Theories of/and the Erotic.”

We will meet five times, biweekly, during the quarter to discuss short texts (for example, three or four articles or book chapters per meeting) that explore the reading group’s theme. Meetings will be on the following Thursdays from 5:00-6:30 p.m.: January 12, January 26, February 9, February 23, and March 9. It is expected that participants will attend at least four of the five meetings. Meetings will be held on the Evanston campus.
